Digital Art II- Time Based Foundations

Digital Art II is designed to give students a strong base in time-based media. Topics include an introduction to audio and video recording, editing and presentation. We will also look at interactivity and real time manipulation of audio and video signals. Lectures introduce students to themes and practitioners important to contemporary media art. Demos provide technical foundations for working with recording and editing technologies and class projects focus on concepts important to time-based media. This introduction to time-based media is focused through the lens of the sensorium:

The sensorium: the parts of the brain or the mind concerned with the reception and interpretation of sensory stimuli

broadly: the entire sensory apparatus- the “seat of sensation” where it experiences and interprets the environments within which it lives.

Record – what does it mean to capture sensation? How does one go about it? As David Byrne says, “There’s still a feeling that uncensored emotions make a good song. They don’t. Pure emotion is just somebody screaming at you or crying.” How does one record an impactful sensory experience?

Release – Multi channel installations, single channel media distributed through the web, and screens of all sizes offer very different sensory experiences. How do choices about the format and display of time-based media impact the viewer’s sensorium?

Respond- As computational algorithms become ever more integrated into our day-to-day experiences interactivity, modulation, and mutation become increasingly familiar sensory experiences. How can the artist work with these contemporary technologies in ways the affect the sensorium?
